Wet Pet Therapy

“a small pet is often an excellent companion for the sick”

Florence Nightingale (1860) from “Notes on Nursing”

Disasters are defined as situations in which needs exceed or overwhelm available resources. Some disasters affect an entire community, while other disasters impact individuals and families. Crises of physical or psychological health can be very personal disasters.
The therapeutic value of pets during illness, trauma, and recovery is well established. And Koi fish may be well suited for people who are not able to provide verbal pet commands or physically care for pets like dogs and cats. By late 2023, the Institute plans to begin installing free or reduced-cost ponds with rehomed koi fish to people seeking this type of pet therapy.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.”

Rachel Carson (1962) from “Silent Spring”

The subject of legendary tales, koi have come to symbolize strength, perseverance, and transformation. Koi ponds are also a source of beauty and peace, providing an ideal setting for quiet reflection or meditation.
For centuries, koi have been cultivated for their beauty, grace, gentleness, longevity, and intelligence. Unlike most finned pets, koi have the ability to learn their habitat, navigate mazes, overcome physical obstacles, interact with their keepers, and even obey commands. Even beginner enthusiasts can quickly teach koi to hand feed – some advanced keepers even have taught their fish eat from customized baby bottles.

Do you know of someone in need of The Joy of Koi program? We are working to partner with pond installers and aquatic pet rescues/shelters to launch this program in late 2023. Based upon available funds, the Board will be responsible for reviewing all applications and selecting the recipients of a free or reduced-cost pond with rehomed koi fish
The requirements and process for nominations will be finalized later this year and posted here. Please check back again for details. Until then, we welcome inquiries about the program or about how to help us realize this goal.
